eCommerce Puzzle Pieces
OPENING THOUGHTS
May is quickly fading into the rearview mirror along with annual spring celebrations like Cinco De Mayo, Mother's Day and for many - graduation. Now we prepare for June and the coming of summer.  Predications are that it will be a very busy summer travel season as we hit the roads and take to the skies to our favorite destinations.  Travel and destination websites should see significant traffic increases and robust bookings.

Google's Core Web Vitals website ranking factors are set for June 2021 implementation. Regardless of what you sell online, it's a good time to revisit the performance aspects of your website and how it delivers the user experience. Pay special emphasis to the mobile experience.

Not yet have an eCommerce website? Kadro is here to help with an array of available services including our newest offering - Accelerated Magento Website Development.

Be sure to take a few minutes to read an informative new article by James Bruner, Senior Business Solutions Analyst, about setting up Google Tag Manager for Adobe Commerce. You can also learn more about James in our Employee Spotlight below.

What do you do at Kadro?

I help Kadro clients with their incoming project and support requests advising  them on the best way to proceed. I also provide counsel on long-term strategy and project ROI. The requests can address a range of issues from frontend bugs to full integrations. Our clients span such a wide range of industries that you really get exposed to a lot of different solutions. So, that’s pretty cool.

If you could do anything you want right now, what would it be?

Explore space. Or be a full-time philanthropist. Or be a full-time philanthropist that travels through space helping people out.

What’s your favorite food?

Food is my love language. I love cooking and try to make dinner for my family every night, so we rotate through a lot of recipes in my house. If I had to pick a singular dish as my favorite though, it wouldn’t be something I make: it would be the Beef Wrap (basically a fancy Gyro) from Devine Foods in Columbia, SC where I grew up. I worked there back in the day and frequented the place for decades. They closed their doors several years ago, but I still dream about their food.

What about family?

I’ve been married for nine years with two kids (three if you count the dog). My wife Lauren has never met a stranger, and she can put together a pretty mean gift basket. My son will be four this summer, my daughter will be one, and Sunny the mini Yorkie turned 5 this year. They’re all pretty great - most of the time.

Favorite video game?

If my kids are asleep and it’s a weeknight you’ll find me either making music or gaming.

Favorite quote?

“You’re not wrong, Walter, you’re just .......” - The Big Lebowski

Favorite place to visit?

Colorado. My family has a place on the Western Slope where I’ve gone my whole life. Being able to share that with my family and now my kids is just incredible, so I try to get out there as much as I can.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Coffee, coffee, and more coffee.

Biggest or most meaningful recent personal accomplishment?

I have a lot to be grateful for - my family, friends, and bandmates to start - but I think one of the biggest accomplishments recently was getting debt free. We still owe on our house, but even with two kids in daycare we managed to pay off all other debts, which is an incredible feeling.

What is one unique thing about you that few people know?

I like to record hip songs about robots when no one is around.

What do you do at Kadro? I’m a Sr. Magento Developer with full stack development experience. When it comes to setting up a Magento store, there isn’t much I haven’t done at some point. Custom feature development, data migration, 3rd party extension installation/configuration, server configuration, and deployments are all within my domain.

If you could do anything you want right now, what would it be? Unrealistically I’d like to orbit and experiment on a black hole. Realistically I’d like to be running a tabletop RPG game right now, but I have to wait for my Saturday game.

What’s your favorite food? On a general level I’d say chicken wings. I have my own wing, sauce, and dip recipes that I have tweaked and modified over the years. On a specific level there is a restaurant in NZ called Flame that makes ribs I have yet to be able to top. I have a BBQ sauce recipe inspired by the experience.

What about family? My wife Helena and I were married in 2018. My mom has retired to Washington with her partner. My sister is still trying to make her way and is currently in Austin, TX.

Have any pets? I have one cat named Doctor. He’s about 95% fluff.

Favorite karaoke song? I tend to listen to the same song on repeat over and over and over again until I can belt out the words. The last song that I subjected to this process was History Read by The Altogether.

Favorite video game? I play a lot of games, so this is a hard question to answer. The game I probably have the strongest fond memories of is Megaman Legends.

Favorite quote? I don’t really mentally catalog quotes. I’d have to look something up which somewhat negates the sentiment.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? An alarm of some sorts generally.

Biggest or simply most meaningful recent professional accomplishment: I take pride in my ability to convert messy failure prone processes and turn them into robust repeatable processes. Every time we take on an existing project that’s pretty much my mission statement. Recently we received glowing feedback from one of those customers about how my efforts had completely changed their feelings about their site and their deployments. It meant a lot to me.

Biggest or most meaningful recent personal accomplishment? About 8 months ago I started a FFXIV savage static with my wife and two real life friends. I hadn’t played the game in years and going from zero to savage was a tall order. We recruited another four people and started trying to tackle the game’s end game content. Despite my inexperience, I stepped up to raid lead and to be honest we were all kinda bad. The group has improved by leaps and bounds and we recently completed our second tier of content ending out the current expansion. I’ve had to make some hard choices in order to get us there, but we did it. And now we’ve teamed up with some new friends and are starting the ultimate difficulty challenges.

What is one unique thing about you that few people know? Haha. If I told you what would I do the next time someone asked me this question? For real though, I tend to be pretty open with my hobbies and interests, so the fun stuff is public knowledge.

Favorite karaoke song: You will not catch me doing Karaoke, but you can find me singing Taylor Swift on road trips.

A message from our President/CEO, Rick Johnson

This eCommerce Insights newsletter is all about Kadro Solutions' 20th Anniversary. It was on February 23, 2001 that Kadro Solutions was incorporated in North Carolina. Founded by Rick Johnson, Malcolm Allen, Scott VandeLinde, and John Bowser in Raleigh, NC. It has been a long journey to establish, build, survive, and grow the business together. I am forever grateful to my business partnership and friendship with Malcolm, Scott, and John. Building and running a business takes commitment, hard work, dedication, and making many sacrifices along the way. Thank you. It has been a remarkable journey together.

First, our clients. We are very grateful and thankful for each and every one of our clients. They have all been a pleasure to work with and serve. We take a great deal of personal pride in helping our clients. Those that appreciate it the most often share their personal and thoughtful thanks to our staff for their service and commitment. Knowing that we're helping our clients run and grow their business is the best motivation and energy to strive for 20 more years.

Second, our partners and vendors. Everyone involved in helping us run our business, a heartfelt thank you for your support, dedication, and service. I'm very grateful for the help, counsel, and service you've provided to me, our business, and our employees.

Last, but certainly not least, is a big thank you and appreciation to all of our employees. From Mitchell Scott, who's been with us for 20 years, to our latest new hire, Joseph Tysinger, and everyone in between - THANK YOU! Without your hard work, dedication to our clients, and going the extra miles you often do, we could not have accomplished what we have over the past 20 years without each of you. My hope is that each employee - former and current - have all had the opportunity to grow, learn, and take pride in what they have accomplished by working at Kadro. You are all part of the Kadro family.

While we've seen a great deal of change throughout the years, one thing that has remained constant is our commitment to helping our clients succeed.

As we continue through the 2020 holiday season and prepare to exit what has certainly been a bizarre and difficult year, we want to take a moment to remember, thank and celebrate our clients - past, present and future (a subtle Scrooge reference for those following along). To all our technology partners that span the eCommerce ecosystem, we appreciate your support and complementary commerce products which allow us to build on the Magento foundation and provide our customers with the right mix of technology solutions to meet their needs. We can audit your website environment and propose solutions to your site’s functionality and performance woes.

Meet Noah Trimble,  Software Engineer at Kadro

NoahT

In this month’s eCommerce Insights newsletter we spotlight Noah Trimble, a back-end software developer at Kadro who is one of our skilled software engineers building Magento customizations and integrating other systems with Magento to meet our client’s needs. Noah has grown into a key member of our software engineering team that has recently delivered new eCommerce sites for Brame Speciality, Houser Shoes, Duplin Winery, MakerPlace, National Wholesale, WebbMason, and SeaDek.  Visit our Portfolio page to learn more about our client projects.

A CO-OP EDUCATION PROGRAM DELIVERING EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Noah has been with Kadro now for almost three years. He came to the company as a number of employees have via the Cooperative Education Program at NC State University (NCSU).  Noah recalls, "I selected Kadro because the co-op program had informed me that previous co-op student participants always had great things to say about the company.  I did multiple co-op rotations working at Kadro while completing my B.S. degree in Computer Science at NCSU. I was pleased to receive an offer for full-time employment from Kadro during my senior year. I had already invested quite a bit of time getting to know the company, its personnel and customers during my co-op rotations and really enjoyed the people and work so I didn't even bother applying anywhere else." All you current and potential NCSU co-op program participants keep this in mind!  Visit our University Co-op Program page for more information.

ENJOY WHAT YOU DO AND WHERE YOU DO IT… KEYS TO CAREER SUCCESS

We asked Noah about the Kadro work environment and the work itself. His response is rather typical of the general attitude of the staff. “I enjoy both the work environment and the work I do at Kadro. The environment is very relaxed, teamwork is good, and I enjoy all my coworkers," he stated, “Before the pandemic, we used to frequently get lunch together, sometimes play games after work, and do other extracurricular activities as a company.”  Noah also mentioned that Kadro management really listens and responds to employee requests and suggestions. For example, Noah asked to be allowed to focus mostly on back-end software engineering work versus front-end work early in his tenure. His request was granted which has made the work he does that much more enjoyable.

FRIENDS, FAMILY, FOOD, FUN AND GAMES

Outside of work, Noah enjoys spending time with friends and family.  He does a bit of TV watching (haven’t we all in this year of unique change and challenges), reading, listening to music, and playing videogames (also a popular pastime in 2020).  While he is into travelling and hiking, those activities have been obviously limited of late. On the gastronomic front, Noah’s enjoys many kinds of food, especially Asian and Hispanic, and is a big fan of Thai curries. Good choice Noah!

Since 2001, Kadro has worked with REEDS Jewelers as their eCommerce solutions provider and partner. Over that time, we have delivered on multiple site redesigns, a re-platforming, the implementation of a number of custom site features and integrations, and evolved REEDS online business to an omni-channel solution.

We believe that this relationship speaks well of our ability to evolve with the needs of our clients, our extensive eCommerce expertise, and our commitment to customer service which has resulted in the common experience of satisfied and loyal clients.

Looking back a few years, in March 2018 Kadro and REEDS successfully launched the re-platform of REEDS.com B2C website onto Magento Commerce. The success of this project was largely measured by achieving functional parity with well-established business processes and mission critical back-office integrations required to operate their online business. It was a large collaborative effort between REEDS' eCommerce and IT teams, Kadro, and a number of other technology partners.

More recently, we worked with REEDS on a redesign of their website.  You can see it here at https://www.reeds.com/.

Mark deCausmeaker, Director of Multi Channel Sales at REEDS Jewelers Inc. described the REEDS/Kadro relationship this way...

“REEDS Jewelers has been in business for over 65 years but having retail knowledge does not necessarily translate into having a successful website. With Kadro we have a partner that offers direction, planning, and services over a wide variety of E-commerce related fields such as mobile commerce, social media and standard ecommerce solutions.

Kadro seeks to anticipate our needs and offer solutions, often before we see the opportunity or problems which enable us to concentrate the bulk of our efforts in our area of expertise, the jewelry industry and our customers."

We are obviously honored to be able to play a role in advancing REEDS success in the highly-competitive retail jewelry business.

We wanted to take a moment to also acknowledge a recent honor bestowed on Arthur Phidd, CIO of REEDS.  Mr. Phidd was named one of the 10 Best CIOS for 2020 by Industry Era Magazine.

Meet Elyse Robillard, Senior Project Manager at Kadro

Elyse Robillard picture

It takes a wide array of skills and experience to successfully complete a major eCommerce project. Thus, the Kadro team is made up of individuals skilled in a number of disciplines from accounting to specialized technical proficiencies. A key role in each project is that of project manager. With that in mind, in this month’s Kadro newsletter we introduce you to one of the company’s senior project managers, Elyse Robillard.

Elyse joined Kadro in 2014 after spending a number of years at computer giant IBM. She was happy to make the transition from the vastness of a large global organization with hundreds of thousands of employees to a more modest sized, family environment  organization like Kadro. The downsizing just felt right and more personal to Elyse.

Like quite a few members of the Kadro team, Elyse fills a number of roles. Officially, she is a Senior Project Manager. She also handles the majority of invoicing for the company’s new and existing eCommerce customer engagements. Keeping accurate track of work and billings is obviously an essential task in any Kadro project. Elyse supplements that work with the function of providing non-technical new hire training to new staff members as they enter the organization.

With her role and tenure, Elyse has been a member of teams involved in a wide range of customer projects from REEDS.com’s (fine jeweler) move to Magento to eCommerce work completed for Weekends Only (furniture retailer) and Doheny’s (consumer and commercial pool supplies and equipment).

Outside of work, Elyse spends plenty of quality time with her son playing outdoors, enjoying time at their pool, and heading to the beach (as Covid conditions allow of course). In the same regard, as conditions allow she also enjoys global travel, especially to Europe and more specifically Ireland. Sounds like fun.

As the holidays commence, we wish all those that may travel a happy and safe journey.
